Sant Jeroni: The spectacular summit of Montserrat

While the world-famous Montserrat Monastery at the foot of the cliffs is usually teeming with tourists, the climb to the summit offers a significantly quieter and more natural perspective of Catalonia. At 1,236 meters, it is officially the highest peak in the mountain range. From up there, you have one of the most impressive panoramas in Catalonia. You have a complete 360-degree view. If you visit the mountains of Montserrat, you shouldn’t miss the view from Sant Jeroni. There are two main routes to reach the summit of Montserrat.

This is how you get to Sant Jeroni

The more challenging option starts directly at the Montserrat Monastery. The trail leads through the narrow Vall de Santa Maria via the famous Staircase of the Poor (Escales dels Pobres). This hike to Sant Jeroni demands good physical condition but rewards hikers with constantly changing perspectives of the bizarre rock formations.

Those looking to save energy can take the Funicular de Sant Joan. The funicular shortens the ascent, allowing you to reach the summit from the mountain station in about an hour’s walk. The path here is mostly level and offers spectacular views of the hinterland before the final stretch to the summit becomes steeper again.

Panoramic view from the edge of the Pyrenees to Mallorca

The highlight of the hike is the summit platform. At the highest point of Montserrat, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama unfolds . A compass rose carved in stone at the summit helps you identify the surrounding valleys and the characteristic, rounded, eroded rock pinnacles that gave the mountain range its name, “the sawn-off mountain.” To the north, the often snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees form a stunning backdrop. Looking south, the view stretches across the vast Catalan hinterland to the metropolis of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. On days with exceptionally clear visibility and low humidity, you can even make out the silhouette of the Balearic island of Mallorca on the horizon.

Practical tips for your visit to Sant Jeroni

Depending on your starting point, you should allow between two and four hours for the hike to Sant Jeroni. Sturdy footwear is absolutely essential due to the rocky paths and numerous steps at the summit. Since there is hardly any shade on the summit plateau, sun protection and plenty of water are indispensable, especially during the summer months. The best time to start the ascent is early morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the best panoramic views.
