The Montserrat Monastery ticket
Previously, entry to Montserrat Monastery was free. During the COVID-19 pandemic access was restricted. This regulation remained in place even after the pandemic and since May 2023, visitors have to pay an entrance fee to Montserrat Monastery. Officially, the monastery emphasizes the benefits of the fee for everyone: “To make the visit more enjoyable for all, to preserve the spiritual atmosphere, and at the same time to contribute to the protection and preservation of Montserrat.” The Montserrat Monastery entrance fee applies to tourists residing outside of Catalonia and the rest of Spain who wish to visit the sanctuary (including the atrium, the basilica, and the Cambril). Conversely, if you are Spanish – you can still enter the monastery for free.
Exceptions to the entrance fee are made for all persons participating in liturgical events such as the monastery mass, other celebrations or confession, as well as guests staying overnight in the guesthouse, hotel, cells or hostel.
The entrance fee is used to finance the upkeep of Montserrat and to support social projects. Around 2,000,000 visitors come here each year. Ticket sales allow for capacity control and regulate visitor access, especially during peak season.
