You should definitely visit Montserrat if you’re ever in Catalonia. It’s a truly special mountain range near Barcelona . While many tourists are (still) unaware of these mountains, they hold great significance for Catalans – because of the monastery and its rich cultural history: Montserrat Monastery is a symbol of Catalan independence . Here, the Catalan language and culture were preserved, even during the Franco regime. In the Montserrat Mountains, the Catalan language continued to be spoken and the culture maintained, despite being officially forbidden at the time. Its secluded location amidst the mountains contributed to this.
Today, Montserrat is the second most important pilgrimage site in Spain – right after Santiago de Compostela. Many Spaniards make the pilgrimage here every year. Tourists don’t make pilgrimages; for them, it’s usually a day trip destination. We personally loved it here. We like mountains and unique natural landscapes – that’s why we wanted to come here. The Montserrat mountain range is exceptionally beautiful. The mountains have a very distinctive shape. The peaks are both jagged and rounded. The name Montserrat comes from Catalan and means “serrated mountain .” The name derives from the appearance of the rock pinnacles and stone cliffs.
The mountain range stands truly magnificent in the heart of Barcelona’s hilly hinterland. Although the mountains are only about 50 kilometers from Barcelona, they are not visible from there because the Tibidabo mountain range (also a great viewpoint in Barcelona) blocks the view. The Montserrat mountains are approximately 10 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. They are part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range, which the Catalans call the Serralada Prelittoral Catalana. The Montserrat mountain range lies within the municipalities of Collbató, El Bruc, Marganell and Monistrol de Montserrat.

Really wonderful is this also in the Czech Republic at the Adršpach rock town.
The Montserrat Monastery
In the eastern part of the mountain range lies the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat . The Stations of the Cross near the monastery, where the famous artist Antoni Gaudí collaborated, are also well-known. The monastery complex is the largest and most famous building in the entire Montserrat mountain range. From the monastery, hiking trails lead to the highest peak, Sant Jeroni, which reaches an altitude of 1236 meters. The Montserrat range also contains other smaller monasteries and hermitages , including the Monastery of Saint Cecilia . These former hermitages were once inhabited but are now deserted.
The most visited destination in the entire Montserrat mountain range is the rock monastery . The monastery is situated right in the heart of the mountains, its buildings overlooked by jagged peaks. Truly spectacular. The architectural style of the buildings is a matter of debate. The roots of Montserrat Monastery stretch back to the 9th century, when hermits began to settle in the caves and crevices of the mountain. Over the centuries, the monastery was expanded.
The monastery complex includes historic buildings, chapels and works of art. The interior of the monastery is well worth seeing. The large monastery church houses the statue of the Black Madonna of Montserrat. This remarkable Marian figure is the destination of millions of pilgrims and visitors. Unlike other pilgrimage sites, you can view the enormous Black Madonna up close – for a separate entrance fee. The monastery also served as an educational institution. A school and a boys’ choir still operate there today.
BLACK MADONNA OF MONTSERRAT
The Black Madonna is called “La Moreneta.” She is an important religious figure and the patron saint of Catalonia. The statue was created in the 12th century and is made of poplar wood. Legend says that the Madonna was discovered in a cave by shepherd boys in 880. You can climb up to the Madonna in the church. Escolania de Montserrat is one of the oldest and most prestigious boys’ choirs in Europe, founded in 1327. The choir plays a central role in the religious and cultural tradition of Catalonia. Around 50 boys aged 9 to 14 live in the monastery, where they receive vocal training and attend school. Many alumni have gone on to have distinguished careers in the music world. Attending their concerts is very popular.

The monastery is not only a place of pilgrimage, but also an extraordinary sight in Spain. It’s worth experiencing the breathtaking landscape and the spiritual atmosphere. A visit is worthwhile even if you’re not religious. It’s a small village nestled in the mountains: the monastery complex struck us as a kind of mountain settlement . How to get to Montserrat
Barcelona and Montserrat are about 50 kilometers apart. There are several ways to reach Montserrat from Barcelona. The best option depends on what other destinations you plan to visit before and after. When planning, also consider whether you already have a car or would need to rent one. There are very good train connections from Barcelona to Montserrat. There are several ways to reach the monastery: hiking trails, a winding road, an aerial cableway (operating since 1930) and a cog railway (re-established in 2003). Depending on your starting point and mode of transport, various combinations are possible. Montserrat can be reached by car or public transport. Visitors on a road trip through Catalonia typically have a rental car and drive to Montserrat. From Barcelona, Montserrat is easily accessible via the AP-7 motorway and then the BP-1121 highway. The final stretch is a winding mountain road. At the end of the road, you’ll find several parking lots very close to the monastery complex. Parking prices are quite high by Spanish standards:

Although the monastery is located high in the mountains, you can easily reach it without a car. A popular option is to take the train from Barcelona to Monistrol de Montserrat . From there, you can take the rack railway (Cremallera de Montserrat), which takes you directly to the monastery on the mountain. The rack railway itself offers a fantastic experience with its ride through the mountains and is a popular mode of transport because of the views. Alternatively, you can take the train from Barcelona to Monistrol de Montserrat and then the cable car (Funicular Aeri de Montserrat) to reach the monastery. The cable car also offers spectacular views of the surrounding area – however, you should be aware of the limited operating hours during the off-season. The cable car doesn’t run all the time, while the funicular operates practically year-round.
GETTING TO MONTSERRAT
You can reach Montserrat by car or public transport. By car, you can take the AP-7 and BP-1121 to the monastery, but parking fees are high. Alternatively, you can take the train to Monistrol de Montserrat and then the cog railway or cable car to the monastery. Both offer stunning views of the surrounding area.

The Montserrat Rack Railway
The Cremallera de Montserrat – the Montserrat rack railway – is an extremely popular way to reach the Montserrat Monastery without any effort. You can drive to the lower station and save yourself the last few kilometers on the winding mountain road. The Montserrat cog railway is also ideal for train travelers, offering a convenient and effortless way to reach the monastery. The lower station is easily accessible by train R5 from Barcelona.

MONTSERRAT rack railway
The Cremallera de Montserrat is an electric cog railway that runs from Monistrol de Montserrat station to Montserrat Monastery. It climbs a 15.6 percent gradient and an altitude difference of 550 meters. The railway was opened in 1892 and modernized after an accident in 1953. Since its reopening in 2003, it offers a comfortable and scenic ride. The journey takes only 13 minutes and offers breathtaking views of Montserrat mountain.

The Montserrat cable car
The cable car ( Funicular Aeri de Montserrat ) is an alternative to the cog railway for reaching the Montserrat Monastery. From Barcelona, the cable car’s lower station is easily accessible by car, and free parking is available. If you’re arriving by train from Barcelona, take the train to Monistrol de Montserrat station. From there, you can take the cable car up to the monastery. Please note: The cable car starts at a different station than the cog railway. You’ll need to get off the train earlier when traveling from Barcelona.

MONTSERRAT CABLE CAR
The Montserrat cable car offers the fastest connection to the Montserrat Monastery. Since 1930, the yellow gondola has been whisking passengers up the steep mountain in just 5 minutes. The cable car was a technological innovation at the time and remains a popular mode of transport to this day. It offers breathtaking views, but is not wheelchair accessible and can get very crowded during peak season. It’s well worth it, though!

Hiking destination instead of excursion destination
You can also enjoy wonderful hiking in Montserrat. A funicular railway runs from the rock monastery up towards the summit of Sant Joan. There you’ll find several hiking trails. The Canal de las Damas via ferrata, a climbing route through a dry gorge, is also popular. Among the most famous peaks in the Montserrat mountains are Sant Jeroni, Miranda dels Ecos and Montgròs.
